Boulder's Role In Combating Global Warming

It turned-out to be a short-distance move from the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) to the University of Colorado.  The Center for Capacity Building at NCAR was cut from the budget since the government failed to act on requests for additional funding.  This was brought to the attention of Senator Hillary Clinton and forwarded to Bill Clinton's Global Initiative Conference in New York this week which was attended by both presidential candidates.  The Rockefeller Foundation provided a $1-million grant to the University of Colorado to accept the continuation of this 34-year body of work which studies the societal impacts of climate change on developing countries.  With billions spent in Washington D.C. and on foreign soil, it is difficult to understand how this program was cut.  Politics aside, thanks to the Clintons and the Rockefellers for coming to the rescue.

CU Speed Limit

A number of bicyclists are traveling too fast among the pedestrian foot traffic on the CU Campus it seems.  Speed Limit Signs for cyclists have been installed posting a 10mph speed limit without pedestrians and 5 mph when pedestrians are present.  Pathways are shared by both fooot and bike traffic and the "rules-of-the-path" need to be followed by both peds and bikers.  Stepping-back for a moment, what a refreshing "traffic problems" to have.

Boulder Roof Tops

The City of Boulder cannot embrace alternative energy enough.  The City Council is reviewing Boulder's Municipal Code with an eye to changing it with regards to the installation of solar panes.  Mechanical systems, of which solar panels are one, are currently restricted to covering no more than 25% of a roof for aesthetic-purposes.  The City Council is considering changing this to 100% of the roof as relates to solar panels.  Many Boulder builders actively utilize green building techniques already and this change will be welcomed.  Alternative energy -- its a beautiful thing.  Go Boulder Green!

CU In 2030

Although the University of Colorado is geographically located within the City of Boulder, it is its own geo-political self-governing pseudo-municipality.  "Flagship 2030" is the name of the school's strategic initiative to plan for the anticipated future growth in CU's student population.  To the east of CU's main campus is the University of Colorado's Research Park.  The University is considering expanding its main campus east onto the CU Reasearch Park land.  Without question, the University of Colorado is significant component of the City of Boulder's ecomomic engine as well as its appeal.  Looking toward the future in Boulder is always exciting!

Trading Tea Cafes

The Dushanbe Cybercafe is a gift to Boulder's sisiter city in Dushanbe, Tajikistan just as Boulder's Dushanbe Tea House was a gift from the citizens of Dushanbe.  It took 10-years to reciprocate the gift, but a solar-powered Internet cafe is set to officially open in Dushanbe.  To refresh your geography, Tajikistan is a former Soviet republic due north of Afganistan.  This is the largest gift ever in the sister city movement.  Tea instills such civility!
