Boulder Municipal Airport Property

Over 50-years ago, the City of Boulder agreed to allow a property owner near the Boulder airport to access the airport directly from his property.  These "through-the-fence" agreements are a thing of the past.  This particular agreement runs with the land to the benefit of subsequent land owners.  There is no expiration date in this particular agreement.  The FAA says these agreements pose a safety violation and have withheld federal funding unless these agreements are set-aside.  The FAA has decided to investigate the City of Boulder's agreement prompted by complaints from neighboring land owners.

Boulder Pop & Scrape Renovations

The City of Boulder is distributing a housing compatibility survey to 13,000 household to solicit their opinions concerning the pop and scrape renovation trend of recent years.  "Pop" refers to the renovation practice of adding a second story to an existing single-story house resulting in more than doubling the size of the previous residence.  "Scrape" refers to the practice of demolishing all or substantially all of an existing residence and replacing it with a much larger house.  The concern is that the character of the existing neighborhood is significantly impacted through the lack of compatibility with the surrounding residential properties.  The controversy is whether restrictions are a violation of individual property rights.

Boulder Spirits

Each year local history buffs take on the rolls of some of Boulder's pioneers -- both famous and infamous.  Gathering at the Columbia Cemetery in Boulder, the "spirits" of Boulder-past walk around the cemetery in period costumes with children usually in-tow talking of what it was like 100-years ago in Boulder.  A bounty hunter, early civic leaders, a photographer, even a notorious mining camp madam could be found.  What an interesting format by which to learn history.

Boulder Sales Tax Revenues

There is good news and not so good news when it comes to Boulder sales tax collections.  The good news is that year to date through August, Boulder's sales tax revenues exceed the prior year by 2.4%.  The not so good news is that the 2009 sales tax revenues were projected to be 9.5% higher.  City planners had expected that the 29th Street Mall would have more tenancts and generate more sales tax revenues then has occurred.

Curbside Composting

The City of Boulder has approved a yard waste and food scrap program launching in November.  The pick-up program will deliver the refuse to a composting facility rather than a land fill site.  Commercial waste company Western Disposal has begun preparing composting pick-up containers and will initially start the program November 10th with those customers that have requested participation and have received a composting container.  Wow!

Boulder Business Goes Green

The City of Boulder organized "10 For Change" which is a challenge for local businesses to reduce their energy use 10% by October 2009.  Participation is on a voluntary basis.  Those businesses that decide to participate can register and will be publically recognized.  The City of Boulder will continue to sponsor bi-monthly forums to give local businesses the knowledge as to how to accomplish their goal.  Local businesses account for approximately 59% of Boulder's greenhouse gases.
